International Coordination of Sustainable Forestry Initiatives

As the plight of forests gets more attention, the number of groups and organizations that have taken on the task of certifying sustainable forestry practices has multiplied. With this proliferation, a need has emerged to coordinate the different certification efforts and establish common criteria for sustainability. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a coalition of groups working to develop a basic set of principles and an accreditation process for sustainable forestry certification efforts worldwide. The sixth draft of the FSC’s Principles and Criteria was distributed to all interested parties on October 15.
