Wood Burning That’s Better for the Environment
From an environmental standpoint, wood burning has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, it is a renewable energy source and the only common fuel that is not a net contributor of carbon dioxide (CO 2) into the atmosphere (growing trees absorb more CO 2 out of the atmosphere than is released into the atmosphere when the wood is burned). On the down side, wood heating is a significant source of air pollution, a fact that has led to extensive regulation, both federally and in many municipalities in the western U.S. While wood stove emissions have dropped dramatically over the past five years, pellet stoves provide a number of environmental advantages.
