Gardening in the Age of Extinction
Janet Marinelli has authored or coauthored two excellent books about environmentally friendly homes (The Naturally Elegant Home, Your Natural House), but this time her topic is gardens—where her primary expertise really lies (Marinelli works for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden). Marinelli makes the case that the act of building is inherently disruptive to existing ecosystems, as both the construction process and the building itself inevitably interrupt the natural movement of water, air, sun, and animals. She argues that a good garden can mitigate these impacts—for example, by including a wetland as a stormwater retention area.
