Whirlpool Introduces Energy Star Washer


In mid-September, the Whirlpool Corporation, which produces more than 50% of the country’s washing machines, introduced its first high-efficiency, Energy Star™-listed product. The Whirlpool Resource Saver™ is the first Energy Star washer with a conventional vertical-axis configuration; all others are horizontal-axis (see EBN, Vol. 6, No. 4). With the vertical-axis, top-loading configuration, the new washer is not as water-efficient as the recently introduced H-axis washers (see table below), but it may find greater acceptance among American buyers who apparently don’t like to bend over to load and unload their washing machines. The washer is also at least $200 less expensive than H-axis models, with a suggested retail price of $599.
