GreenGrid--A Modular Green Roof System
While green roofs can be created using a wide range of components and configurations, nearly all involve an integral relationship between the roof membrane and the growing medium—typically through an intermediate drainage layer. Often, green roof systems are sold as part of a new roofing package. Introduced in August, GreenGrid™ takes a markedly different approach. Roy F. Weston, Inc. has teamed up with ABC Supply to develop a modular green roof system that simplifies the installation process. Weston’s GreenGrid system is comprised of interlocking 2’ x 4’ (600 mm x 1,200 mm) trays made of 100% post-consumer recycled, 150-mil (3.8 mm) HDPE plastic that arrive pre-planted. GreenGrid is unique in its flexibility, with the modules able to be easily repositioned or removed. Shallow, 4”-deep (100 mm) modules are designed for low vegetation (sedums, grasses, and wildflowers) and weigh 15 lbs/ft2 (70 kg/m2) fully planted and wet. Thicker, 8”-deep (200 mm) modules are designed for taller (intensive) vegetation, including ornamental perennials and shrubs; these modules weigh 28 lbs/ft2 (140 kg/m2) fully planted and wet. The modules are pre-planted to client specification, so the vegetation arrives on the roof with established roots and mature appearance. Nurseries are able to work within their familiar business environment—on the ground—rather than having to learn how to coordinate their work with other roofing trades.
