American Pride--Paint Made from Vegetable Oil

Southern Diversified Products has a vegetable-oil-based line of interior latex paints named “American Pride.” The new paint is based on a monomer developed by University of Southern Mississippi (USM) polymer science researchers to take the place of a petroleum-based solvent in the formulation of interior latex paint. By replacing the traditional solvents in the paint with this new castor oil acrylated monomer, the developers have also dramatically reduced volatile organic compound (VOC) levels from 200-400 grams per liter (gpl) for typical paints to around 3 gpl for American Pride products.
