Shaw Stakes out a Sustainability Claim in Commercial Carpet

After years of playing catch-up to outspoken carpet-industry environmentalists Ray Anderson of Interface and Mac Bridger of Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, Shaw Industries is taking an aggressive position on environmental responsibility. Building on the success of its EcoWorx® backing system, in early December Shaw president Julian Saul announced a noteworthy recycling guarantee. Shaw promises to take back—at no charge to the customer—any EcoWorx-backed carpet tile or 6’-wide (1.8 m) roll carpet and recycle it into new EcoWorx backing. This promise was made in the context of a broader statement committing Shaw to a path guided by the Cradle-to-Cradle Design Protocol developed by William McDonough and Michael Braungart (see EBN Vol. 12, No. 6). “We see sustainability as an essential business practice for our corporation, our suppliers, and our customers,” says Saul, as quoted in a company statement.
