Carpet Industry and California Agree on New Green Label

On June 14, 2004, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) released the new “Green Label Plus” independent testing program for indoor emissions from carpets. It took a year of sometimes contentious negotiations with California’s Sustainable Building Task Force and its Department of Health Services, Indoor Air Quality Section, to develop this new program that bridges the gap between CRI’s Green Label program and the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Low-Emitting Materials Credit 2. Green Label Plus appears to be a big winner for both sides, providing carpet manufacturers with a single, well defined standard to meet, while adding significant rigor to conform with California’s requirements.
