LEED Gets User Friendly

At Greenbuild 2005 in Atlanta the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) rolled out the new LEED® for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC), version 2.2, and a series of process-related changes to all its LEED® rating systems that are aimed at addressing user concerns and reducing the costs of documentation. Recommended by a special “LEED Task Force” convened by the Council’s board of directors and led by founding chairman David Gottfried (see EBN Vol. 14, No. 9), the process changes involve a powerful new “LEED Online” website for submitting applications, the ability to get feedback on design-phase credits prior to submitting the full application, and the elimination of requests for follow-up documentation by reviewers. All of these changes have potentially dramatic ramifications. “Folks are in for a completely different LEED,” promises Tom Hicks, USGBC vice president of LEED.
