USDA Announces Biobased Rule

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) secretary Ann Veneman
announced in January 2005 the launch of the Federal Biobased Products Preferred Procurement Program (abbreviated FB4P). Authorized by section 9002 of the 2002 Farm Bill, the new rule requires federal agencies to purchase biobased products instead of conventional products when it is practical in terms of price, availability, and performance. “This rule promotes energy independence and the use of environmentally sustainable energy from biological sources, while at the same time creating new demand for agricultural commodities and new business investment and job growth in rural America,” said Veneman.
