New Admixture Solves Concrete's Weaknesses

A new concrete admixture could come to replace a variety of waterproofing and corrosion-protection membranes and coatings applied to concrete. Concrete, often strengthened with steel rebar, is porous and hydrophilic, allowing the rebar to corrode through contact with air and water, a process that is exacerbated by mineral salts. To address these problems, contractors may apply waterproof coatings or use additives to densify the concrete. Hycrete, from Hycrete, Inc., of Jersey City, New Jersey, takes a different approach by making the concrete itself waterproof, saving materials, labor, and time.
