SierraPine Offers Improved Fire-Retardant MDF


After a five-year absence, SierraPine is issuing a reformulated version of its popular Medite FR (fire retardant) medium-density fiberboard (MDF) panel that it discontinued in 2002 (see EBN Vol. 11, No. 11). SierraPine is bringing back this no-added-formaldehyde panel to replace Medite FR2 MDF, which used an urea-formaldehyde binder. “We went away from FR because of cost concerns,” said Jeff Baker, SierraPine’s marketing director, noting that formaldehyde binders are traditionally less expensive, but, he said, “LEED considerations are now driving the market.” (Buildings pursuing LEED certification can earn a point for using wood products with no added urea-formaldehyde.)
