CalStar to Begin Production of Fly Ash Bricks

CalStar Products will begin producing bricks and pavers made from fly ash in its Caledonia, Wisconsin, facility starting in January 2010. Made from 40% high-calcium, type C fly ash and 60% local aggregates (along with proprietary ingredients), these products do not require energy-intensive firing or the use of portland cement. Fly ash is commonly used as a partial substitute for portland cement in concrete products, but this may be the first commercial product to use it as a complete replacement. In CalStar’s process, the fly ash acts as a cementitious pozzolan to harden the brick, which passes the ASTM C216 test for facing brick at the severe weathering and FBX (highest dimensional tolerance) levels.
