Wood-chip and Cement Wall Forms

Our readers may be familiar with Faswall, which has been promoted in green building circles since the early ’90s (see EBN Vol. 1, No. 3, and the update Checking in with Faswall). We recently learned that Faswall is actually modeled on a product called Durisol, which has been made in Switzerland since the 1940s and in Mitchell, Ontario, Canada since the 1950s. Durisol is basically a concrete made with mineralized wood shavings as the aggregate, instead of sand and stone. This mixture is used to make stay-in-place wall forms for concrete structures, free-standing sound barriers, and other products. With a newly expanded and updated factory in Ontario and licensed manufacturers in the U.S., Durisol is becoming more widely available.
