Green Product Sub-category: Plastic and Rubber Shingles
Plastic roofing products, like plastic lumber, provide a use for plastics in the solid-waste stream. Products included here appear very durable, but as with plastic lumber, the long-term effects of UV light, and expansion and contraction of the material, are still unknown. Some of these products carry 50-year warranties—longer than those of asphalt shingles. Another environmental benefit of some of these products is their end-of-life recyclability. Rubber roofing shingles and tiles can provide exceptional durability without adding a lot of weight to the roof. Some products made from crumb rubber may use environmentally questionable binders.
