Carpet cushions may be made from a variety of recycled, natural, and/or synthetic materials. Natural materials include jute fibers and animal hair; synthetic materials include nylon and polypropylene waste from carpet manufacturing and rebond polyurethane (reprocessed from virgin prime flexible polyurethane products). As with carpet itself, care should be taken not to expose the cushion to moisture—including long-term moisture from concrete slabs—to minimize the potential for microbial growth. Flexible-foam carpet padding frequently contains brominated flame retardants (BFRs) which have been identified as a growing health and environmental concern. Carpet cushion is used primarily in residential applications.(See also 06 16 29 - Acoustical Underlayment.)
