In 2005, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) decided that, in lieu of resurfacing the flat roof on its Washington headquarters, it would design and install a green roof with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. The result is a 3,300-ft2 (300-m2) roof featuring both a roof garden for staff and extensive, non-accessible green roof areas. In this book, Werthmann explores the history and current state of green roofs in an introductory essay, then moves on to examine the ASLA roof in detail, from initial design studies and engineering to the plants and planting mediums used. The effort is well documented with photographs, illustrations, and technical information such as initial rainwater retention data. ASLA also promises to continue to monitor the roof and publish data on its website, www.asla.org.
