by Christopher B. Leinberger
In 1939, a display at the New York City World’s Fair provided a model for future development in the U.S., with superhighways connecting suburbs full of single-family houses and large lawns. This vision of the future, of course, came true after World War II as a burgeoning middle class moved out of urban areas into suburbs.
After tracing the history of this development, Leinberger, director of the Graduate Real Estate Program at the University of Michigan, explores the social and economic possibilities of moving people back into cities and towns, where they can rediscover walkable urbanism. He goes on to explain how the market is transforming development patterns and lay out the steps for developing and financing walkable urban centers.
