by Karl Ochsner
While heat pumps are best known in the U.S. for their cooling capabilities, Ochsner (who manufactures heat pumps in Germany), makes a convincing case for heat pumps as the heating (and sometimes cooling system) of choice in many circumstances — cost-effective, clean, and not inherently reliant on the liquid fuels he argues must be reserved for other uses. Even though the electricity that powers a heat pump is only as green as its source, a heat-pump system draws up to 75% of the energy it delivers from its surroundings. The title of this book, which was quite readably translated from the German, is misleading, since not only ground-source systems are discussed, but also air- and water-source systems. A theoretical explanation of the heat-pump cycle is over the head of a general reader, but the technically-minded will appreciate it. Clear text with good illustrations and numerous diagrams and graphs explain how to design various types of heating and cooling systems. Ochnsner also discusses heating domestic water, building ventilation, and offers cost comparisons with other heat sources.
