Introduction to Natural Building

January 04 - 09, 2009 - Warren, VT

What is natural building? The responses to this question are wide and varied, and while there is no single definition, there are numerous interwoven themes that help point us towards an answer. In this class, we will address this question from many angles as we look at historical and contemporary contexts of natural building across the globe, as well as natural building processes and materials, including strawbale, cob, earth, and stone. This course will focus on the theory, philosophy, design, and science of natural building, with examination given to all elements of a structure, and how the structure integrates into its environment. We will explore our subject through lecture and presentation, discussion, site tours, and participatory exercises to gain a comprehensive understanding of natural building in our modern world. Beginner to Intermediate.
