Mark Carr looking for info on construction waste

From: MarkCarr2@aol.com

I am working on a grant proposal for a pilot construction and demolition debris (C&D) recycling and waste reduction project in Kansas City. I am stymied by lack of information about the proportions of waste that come from home construction and remodeling vs the portion that comes from Industrial construction and remodeling. While I suspect the industrial is larger, I need some hard data. Can anyone point me to some sources for this information?

C&D Waste Reply

I've done quite extensive waste characterization studies of the C&D waste stream - you can contact Metro here in Portland, Oregon at (503) 797-1663 and ask for Bryce Jacobson - he can send you reports on both the residential as well as commercial/industrial - as well as the actual breakout of tons for each. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me. Debbi Allen, River City Resource Group,Inc. (503)248-4550

Russell Clark with some more references

Hey Mark,

I worked on a report with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (Philadelphia Office) for the Mid-Atlantic Consortium of Recycling and Economic Development Officials and EPA Region III called, "A Status Report: Building Material Reuse/Recycling in the Residential Construction Industry and Case Studies from the Mid-Atlantic Region and Around the Nation." In it are many references to people, programs, and projects related to C&D Reuse and Recycling.

Two "experts" I have worked with who would also be good contacts:

Peter Yost - National Association of Homebuilders Research Center (301) 249-4000 x542

Robin Snyder - EPA's Urban and Economic Development Division (202) 260-8331

Like someone else said, Portland seemed to be the most successful region along with North Carolina's Triangle J area.

Good Luck, RUSS actlocally@worldnet.att.net

"WasteSpec is a manual which, for the first time, provides architects and engineers with both model specifications and background information addressing waste reduction, reuse, and recycling before and during construction and demolition. The 114-page manual includes model specifications tailored to all sixteen divisions of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) system of specifications. Each provision includes a cost implication symbol. The manual also includes background information on alternatives for handling construction and demolition waste, information specifically designed for bidders on how to estimate recyclable waste, a sample waste management plan, a checklist of 135 materials and items typically contained in demolished buildings, and a list of resources for further information. WasteSpec comes in a three-ring binder with a computer disk containing the model specifications in a generic format that can be electronically cut and pasted into a specifier's standard specifications."
