Wood Products Certification:
A Progress Report

Third-party certification of forest operations and wood products is picking up steam. Large new tracts of land are being certified, including a number of publicly owned forests. A few forest managers—as opposed to the lands themselves—now carry blanket certifications, covering any forests they manage. New products are carrying chain-of-custody certification stamps. Fueling all this is a growing awareness of certification and an increasing demand for wood products that environmentally conscious consumers can feel good about. All this is not going unnoticed by the more mainstream wood products industry; a number of efforts are underway to shift conventional forest management—or at least the public’s perception of it—towards greater sustainability. This article takes a look at some of the more important recent developments with forest and wood products certification and offers suggestions on how to increase our use of certified wood and support this important trend.
