Association for Environment Conscious Building
The AECB was formed in 1989 to encourage greater environmental awareness within the UK construction industry. The web site includes a section on green building news in the UK, a listing of aecb memebrs in the UK, and a discussion forum. More extensive resources ae available to members.

Big Green Discussion Group
Big Green is an e-mail list forum for the exchange of information and ideas specific to building types other than single-family houses. It has a particular focus on large buildings. Archives are available online. Big Green is cosponsored by Drew George, BuildingGreen, Inc. and Iris Communications, Inc.

Building Environmental Science and Technology

Web site for this leading nonprofit organization founded by EBN Advisory Board member Steve Loken. CRBT educates the public on issues relating to housing and the environment, with emphasis on innovative materials and technologies. Builders of the nationally known ReCraft 90 and TimberTech.

Centre for Design at RMIT
The Centre for Design's goals are: 1.to focus the work of Australian designers, researchers, industry and government on the changing relationship between design, production and consumption; 2.to develop community and industry awareness and understanding of the role of design in achieving national economic, environmental and cultural goals; etc. Site has some interesting links.

Guiding Principles of Sustainable Design
Written for National Park facilities, but a great resource for designers of any buildings or landscapes. Lots of information in a friendly, graphic style. The complete book is available on the Web.

High Performance Buildings Database
This database from the U.S. DOE collects and organizes information on projects of all types and sizes, ranging from homes and commercial interiors to large buildings and even whole campuses. Users can submit projects by providing details on the design and construction process, the team, and the resulting performance.

Canada-based international organization promoting green building practices--sponsor of the Green Building Challenge.

Minnesota Sustainable Design Guide
Comprehensive green building site with interlinked strategies and case studies.

National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education
A collection of resource materials for use in sustainable design courses, available for free download. Some of the material is a bit rough, but it's worth a look.

Natural Capitalism
Compelling arguments that companies will improve their profitability and gain competitive advantage through radically more productive use of natural resources. The text is downloadable from the Web site, along with extensive supplemental material that doesn't appear in the book.

NRDC's Washington, DC Eco-Office
A detailed description of one of the most environmentally conscious offices in any urban area. The Natural Resources Defense Council took two floors of a reasonably efficient building and made them into a model of green office design.

Oikos
Extensive Web site features the REDI building materials database, archives from the no-longer-published Energy Source Builder newsletter, and the Iris Catalog, with online ordering of many green building resources.

Rocky Mountain Institute
RMI is a nonprofit research and educational foundation. Its mission is to foster the efficient and sustainable use of resources as a path to global security. RMI's acclaimed Green Development Services team consults on many high-profile projects. The Institute's newsletters are a great read on this Web site.

Santa Monica Green Building Program
This Web site supports implementation of Santa Monica's Green Building Ordinance, with requirements, guidelines, and recommendations. Most interesting is the Design Advisor, which appears to be modeled on our own Green Building Advisor, but has more pictures (and is specific to Santa Monica's climate and context).

Society of Building Science Educators
The Society of Building Science Educators is an association of university educators in architecture who support excellence in the teaching of environmental science and building technologies.

Sustainable Architecture, Building and Culture
A wealth of resources relating to green building, organized in logical categories with lots of links to other sites.

Sustainable Business
Sustainablebusiness.com includes The Sustainable Business Insider, a free, online-only monthly publication that covers renewable energy, social investing, green building & construction, organic agriculture and more; Sustainable Business Opportunities; and Jobs in Sustainable Business. Site author Rona Fried founded the Sustainable Business Network before starting this new venture.

Sustainable Schools
This site is geared toward those interested and involved in designing, developing, and constructing high performance schools. It provides a diverse collection of sustainable building resources including guidelines, programs, case studies, relevant publications, and funding options/incentives.

U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Program
Brief introductions to many topics, with links to Department of Energy programs and initiatives on energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings. The detailed listing of software tools is itself a valuable resource.

U.S. Green Building Council
Formed in 1993, the USGBC is a coalition of building-related organizations promoting green building practices. Included here is the LEEDTM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Building Rating System, articles by member groups (including EBN), and building case studies.

Whole Building Design Guide
An effort by the U.S. government to consolidate design guidelines in one easily-updatable reference. Currently inconsistent in depth of content and quality, but contains some good material, especially on energy.

Writing the Green RFP
AIA's Committee on the Environment has put together a brief but beneficial guide to greening requests for proposals and qualifications (RFPs and RFQs). Intended for developers, building owners, and architects, Writing the Green RFP presents the basics of the RFP for design services and addresses some considerations unique to the green RFP.
