Happy Holidays from BuildingGreen!

We wish all of you a happy, life-changing year ahead, and thank you for all the good, important work you do and choices you make.

We had our annual holiday party for staff and their guests on Wednesday evening; it's something we look forward to every year. If there was enough room, we'd have you all over. That's part of the reason we've developed this LIVE section of our website — so we can catch up with each other, have lively discussions, and bask in such good company.

Here are some photos from our party. (Click the pictures for a larger version.)


In the hallway — good people, good food, twinkly lights.


Each of us on staff brings in a dish or two: hearty foods and delectable desserts.


Lots of talk and laughter.


In our new conference room, a slideshow of Alex's recent photos from Sweden running in the background was the source of much interest and discussion.




It's a kid-friendly party, too, with an activity room that generally winds up spilling over into the whole place. This high-stakes poker game happened in a corner of the library.

I'd like to second Mark's wishes for a happy holiday season for all of our readers. Now you can see where all the "magic" happens in our offices in Brattleboro--and what happens when you pull us away from our computers for just a few hours. Warmth, merriness, and good food (we have many wonderful chefs among us). Now, if only I could figure out what spoons have to do with a card game...

This time of year, and this traditional BuildingGreen holiday gathering remind me of why I love this work so much - great people, great work, and great connections. For me, it's the deep commitment and relationships that make it happen. I get to talk and work every day with Alex, Nadav, Mark, Allyson, Michael, Tristan... all of the fantastically interesting and talented folks here at BuildingGreen. But it is rare to get to spend time with other folks around Vermont who are doing wonderful work.

We do get to host some wonderful events, like our breakfast at Greenbuild for green leaders (http://www.buildinggreen.com/ebn/calendar-item.cfm...) and that crazy party at the Funky Buddha (http://www.buildinggreen.com/live/index.cfm/2007/1...), but this is much more of our community. And what a fine community it is.

As we look toward the new year, may you take the opportunity to deepen your connection to your own community.

I'm so happy to see that the tradition lives on, even as changes happen in the BuildingGreen team! Wish I could have been there with you all to celebrate what, by all appearances, seems to have been a very good year! BTW--is that Willie in the 5th photo? I figured he'd disappeared somewhere up in Casco Bay ;-) Kudos to Jim for getting the Bulletin into a more appealing format. And thanks to you all for everything that you do... I remember how hard we tried to pry open a door for green at The Home Depot and now that I'm part of their team I see why it was so hard. Huge corporations change course very slowly. But I think we're on the right track with EcoOptions... it's just that big companies like THD will always be following the trend rather than cutting the way like you all.

I was pretty amazed by the party--which was awesome. The turn out was great, the food was incredible, and I got to meet and chat with some really cool people. It was all a reminder that I couldn't ask for a better place to work, a better job to have or a better group of people to spend 50+% of my waking life with. I am genuinely psyched about BuildingGreen in 2008 and beyond, there's a lot of cool things in the pipeline for the web, for the newsletter and for GreenSpec. Oh yeah, and Greenbuild being in Boston for 2008? aw. yeah. BuildingGreen.com is gonna bring it. ;)
