Brattleboro, VT — The revised 7th edition of the widely used GreenSpec® Directory of environmentally preferable building products will be available by the end of June 2007. Over 2,100 listings from more than 1,500 companies are included--232 are new in this edition. GreenSpec provides architects, building owners, and builders with the most complete source for comprehensive green building product information. "With the dramatic growth in interest in green building, access to clear, objective information on green building products is a high priority," said GreenSpec coeditor Alex Wilson.
The GreenSpec Directory is published by BuildingGreen Inc., based in Brattleboro, Vermont and is used by thousands of building industry professionals to identify and gather unbiased information on products that can improve the environmental performance and energy efficiency of buildings. While more than 230 product listings were added in this edition, over 100 were removed. Products are dropped for various reasons: because the manufacturing processes have changed (such as a reduction of recycled content), for example, or because GreenSpec criteria have been tightened so that the lowest-performing products no longer qualify.
"Each year we raise the bar with some of our product criteria," noted Wilson. "As a result, the GreenSpec content changes with each new edition." For example, toilet listings in GreenSpec are now limited to High Efficiency Toilets (HETs) that flush with 1.28 gallons of water or less.
The criteria used for screening products for GreenSpec have been refined over more than 12 years by the editors of Environmental Building News, the oldest and most respected publication serving the green building industry. These criteria are published in the new 7th edition, and they can be downloaded from BuildingGreen.com in the updated article "What Makes a Product Green." http://www.buildinggreen.com/ebn/sample/reprints.cfm
"Unlike other directories in the construction and design sector, GreenSpec does not charge for listings or for the review process," said Wilson, "and we don't accept advertising." The product research process is supported strictly by publication sales, allowing GreenSpec to maintain editorial independence--a feature that GreenSpec users greatly appreciate, according to Wilson.
The 392-page GreenSpec Directory is organized by the expanded CSI MasterFormat 2004 structure. Instead of offering guideline specifications in a range of sections throughout the directory, the new edition offers specifications for just four sections of Division 01 (Construction Waste Management, Testing for Indoor Air Quality, Sustainable Design Requirements, and General Commissioning Requirements). Together, these four sections provide an overview of sustainable design requirements for a variety of projects and can be tailored to individual project requirements as necessary.
The directory costs $89, plus $8 shipping and handling. GreenSpec-listed products can also be found in the online BuildingGreen Suite, a subscription-based information service available for $199 per year.
