Brattleboro, VT —GreenSource magazine, a McGraw-Hill Construction publication supported by BuildingGreen Inc., was honored with a 2007 James H. Neal award - considered the "Pulitzer Prize of business media" - as "Best Start-Up Publication" during ceremonies held on March 24, 2007. The award follows a successful launch year for GreenSource and recognition from 2007 Folio Awards for Best Editorial, Business-to-Business (Bronze Award) and Best Design of a New Magazine (Silver Award).

BuildingGreen's staff editors provide editorial input, feature articles, case studies, and technical reviews of all GreenSource content. According to Nadav Malin, editor of BuildingGreen's monthly Environmental Building News and executive editor of GreenSource, the collaboration between McGraw-Hill and BuildingGreen is a key reason for the first year success of GreenSource magazine. "The resources and knowledge base of McGraw Hill Construction is impressive, especially in meeting the challenge that comes with establishing a new magazine," he said.

Also instrumental in the publication of GreenSource are the editorial staff members from McGraw-Hill Construction, with content overseen by vice president and editorial director for McGraw-Hill Construction and editor in chief of Architectural Record Robert Ivy, and design supervised by group design director Anna Egger-Schlesinger. The business side of the publication is managed by McGraw-Hill Construction's experienced team, led by group publisher James H. McGraw, IV.

As executive editor of GreenSource, Malin works closely with McGraw-Hill Construction through a contractual arrangement between McGraw-Hill Construction and BuildingGreen. BuildingGreen remains an independent company based in Brattleboro, Vermont, where its staff of 20 produces Environmental Building News, GreenSpec® Directory, and the online BuildingGreen Suite, among other resources. Mr. Malin was instrumental in developing the content for GreenSource's case studies, which consistently report the energy use and carbon footprints of featured projects; no other North American publication includes this information. He also serves as chair of the Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group for the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Rating System, is a LEED Faculty Member, and a LEED Accredited Professional.

Of the magazine's 42,000 readers, 30,000 are members of the US Green Building Council. BuildingGreen's long involvement with industry trade associations and events was helpful in the selection of GreenSource as the member publication of the U.S. Green Building Council. Readers include architects, interior designers, builders, developers, and building owners.

BuildingGreen's executive editor Alex Wilson is also involved with GreenSource, serving as a consulting editor. Mr. Wilson served on the USGBC board for 5 years, including two as an officer. He also served on the boards of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association and the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council.

Other BuildingGreen staff who assist with GreenSource include Mark Piepkorn, who serves as the new magazine's products editor, and Tristan Roberts and Jessica Boehland, contributing editors. The team helps plan, write, and edit GreenSource articles.

BuildingGreen staff have authored stories in all of the magazine's departments, including case studies, feature articles, policy reports, current trends, opinion pieces, and interviews. In addition to case studies of more than a dozen leading green projects, articles written by BuildingGreen's staff have covered integrated design, post-occupancy evaluation, passive survivability, and energy targets for averting climate change.

BuildingGreen's publications — Environmental Building News, the GreenSpec product directory, and the web-based BuildingGreen Suite — do not accept advertising. The company is supported exclusively by subscriptions. "We strive to maintain our position as independent arbiters of what qualifies as a green product or technology," Wilson said.
