Your healthiest insulation choices…and how to detail them in high-performance assemblies.

Determining what type of insulation to install (and how much) can be complex from many angles—environmental issues, human health, performance, and building science.

No other product category offers such a diverse range of materials and properties. And on top of the wide range of existing insulation materials, there are new products appearing all the time!

Then there's the issue of how to specify and install insulation products within assemblies that deliver the required performance.

Two high-performance building experts show how to connect environmental and other performance considerations with design and project-level details.

In a one-hour on-demand webcast, architect Steve Baczek and BuildingGreen's Peter Yost will give you real-world examples of how to select insulation materials that fit big-picture environmental concerns—and how to incorporate them into actual assemblies that meet the highest standards of performance.

In addition to a discussion of BuildingGreen's top insulation picks for specific applications, Steve and Pete will show you photos supporting the details—from three of Steve’s high performance projects:

  • Residential new construction
  • Residential retrofit
  • A Passivhaus project

For each case study above, you'll learn about job site issues including ease of use by contractors, assembly vs. component considerations, and the specific environmental considerations behind the insulation choices.

Presenters

Steven Baczek is a registered architect with over 20 years of construction industry experience. His initial training in the contracting trades, coupled with his architectural experience has made him not only an architect with full respect for the integration of design and construction, but an expert in building technology as well.

Many of Steve's architectural projects have been Building America demonstration projects, featuring a systems approach to building durable, healthy, comfortable, energy efficient, and environmentally responsible structures. Steve utilizes his full-spectrum building expertise in everything from design review and analysis to post occupancy building failure investigations.

Steve's primary focus of "New Construction" work as an architect is high performance residential projects. His work has included a number of LEED Platinum and Zero Energy Homes, and also includes one of the first Passive Houses built in New England. In addition to new construction, Steve has also done extensive work in the areas of architectural renovation and building systems re-engineering. These projects have included "Deep Energy Retrofits" and Zero Energy renovations.

Peter Yost is the person you turn to if you want to truly understand how to design or retrofit a high-performing building. He brings more than 25 years experience in building, researching, teaching, writing, and consulting on high-performance homes. His expertise stretches from construction waste management and advanced framing to energy efficiency and building durability.

Peter has been called upon to provide building-science expertise to the nation's leading homebuilding programs, including NAHB's Green Building Standard, USGBC's LEED for Homes, EPA's WaterSense, and the U.S. Department of Energy's Building America.

Peter is an instructor for the Boston Architectural College's Sustainable Design Certificate program and for the University of Massachusetts Department of Building Materials and Wood Technology program in Amherst.

A LEED AP, he is a past co-chair of the USGBC's LEED for Homes program, a member of the LEED faculty, and a certified instructor for the NAHB Advanced Green Building: Building Science course.
