Part 2 of Kjell Anderson's "Early-Design Modeling: New Tools and New Approaches"

"The sun is a challenging light source."

Understatement of the year? Or the decade?

As Kjell Anderson explains in his new book, effective daylighting can save your clients real money by reducing peak electric loads, improving retail sales, and boosting worker productivity.

Getting consistent results when your artistic medium is the sun and sky can be one of the best design tricks to have up your sleeve—but it's also one of the most difficult to pull off.

Is that window bringing in daylight or causing intolerable glare? Do you really know? The three panelists will show how they have used simulation to determine the difference, with overviews of daylighting, glare, and several case studies.

Your next stop…the Daylight Zone

This webcast will teach you how to:

  • measure and model daylighting
  • find the sweet spot between energy performance and occupant happiness
  • balance light levels within a space
  • predict and prevent glare
  • optimize solar heat gain
  • minimize thermal loss

Learn how one architect quickly developed models in-house to compare the same space with and without a light shelf.

Daylighting to Zero

Join three architects as they share design tips and daylighting strategies from a variety of project types.

  • See how the design team for the Bullitt Center gradually arrived at a final daylighting plan, and learn about more strategies for daylighting to net zero in a variety of buildings.
  • Follow the fascinating process of daylighting a natatorium despite the risk of glare from the water. (Flippers required.)
  • Watch an existing Seattle office tower transform from an overglazed nightmare into a dreamily productive space enjoying useful daylight 54% of the time.

Presenters

A lifelong Washington resident, Kjell Anderson practices architecture at LMN Architects and works with the LMN Tech Studio in Seattle. When he's not designing buildings and simulating energy performance, he spends time with his wife and daughters, plays the violin/fiddle, and is active in local and national sustainability and AIA initiatives.

Christopher Meek is a Research Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Washington and registered architect. He is among the core faculty of the Integrated Design Lab (IDL) at the University's College of Built Environments.

In this role, he consults with design teams in the Pacific Northwest and nationally with a focus on building energy performance, daylighting, visual comfort, electric lighting, and climate responsive design. He is co-author of Daylighting Design in the Pacific Northwest published in 2012 by the University of Washington Press.

For the past 25 years, Lisa has focused her work on the development of green building projects, with a focus on lighting and daylighting. Formerly with SERA, she is currently senior associate at SRG Partnership. Her leadership in integrated design and incorporating sustainability at the earliest stage of projects has been instrumental in achieving project goals.
