ON-DEMAND WEBCAST

Key benefit of attending:

In just one hour, learn how to vet products and materials (without having to earn chemistry and toxicology degrees!). Includes special access to a forum offering post-webcast product vetting support.

Who should attend:

designers, architects and contractors trying to navigate the new rules of product vetting in the Wild West of materials transparency and toxicity screening.

What you will learn:

  • Strengths and weaknesses of the major disclosure tools: HPD, EPD, MSDS, and Declare Label
  • How to foster partnerships with manufacturers to get the data you need
  • How to interpret the information you get—and how to spot information gaps
  • Practical tools for documenting, tracking, and sharing what you learn with your team

Webcast details:

Are you still vetting products by the seat of your pants?

You’re not alone: most designers are still learning how to ask for and use new tools like HPDs, GreenScreen, and the Declare label. But in an era where the MSDS doesn't even have to include most of the toxic chemicals people are worried about in building materials, the onus is on designers to avoid the worst offenders.

To the rescue: Chris Lee and Scott Kelly of Re:Vision Architecture.

These guys have been knee-deep in green materials for years and have product vetting down to a science, with deep experience in projects ranging from LEED…to the Living Building Challenge Red List…to clients with custom requirements.

They’ve gotten so good that they built a consulting practice around teaching their no-more-tears research strategies and time-saving workflows to other building professionals.

Now Chris and Scott will share their closely guarded secrets in this BuildingGreen webcast.

Learn how to ferret out everything you ever wanted to know about building materials without wasting thousands of frustrating hours digging up the answers on your own.

Look, you may never have to track every ingredient of every component of a three-ton air handler, but if you ever needed to—Chris and Scott have done that.

You’re more likely to need a positive, market-transforming way to tell a product rep that you can’t specify his task chair because of the halogenated flame retardants—and this webcast will show you how to solve this and other common product-vetting dilemmas.

Includes access to a post-webcast forum to support you in applying what you’ve learned.

During the webcast, you’ll receive a homework assignment: Vet one product you’re considering for a current project, and post your results in a special forum BuildingGreen is hosting.

Chris, Scott, and other participants will give you tips and other comments to help you cement the knowledge you’ve gained from the webcast.

Presenters

Beginning with a career with historic preservation and adaptive re-use projects, Scott's interest in creating sustainable and enduring buildings led him to found Re:Vision in 2002. Under Scott's leadership, Re:Vision’s interdisciplinary team has designed or consulted on hundreds of innovative green projects, including 30 LEED Platinum projects.

Scott is a champion of green building standards and verifications, including LEED, Living Building Challenge, Net-Zero Energy Building Certification, Sustainable SITES Initiative, and Passive House. He was longtime Chair of Philadelphia AIA Committee on the Environment, is Senior Fellow within Philadelphia University’s Sustainable Design program, and is a founding Board Member of the Philadelphia Living Building Challenge Collaborative.

Chris supports project documentation and visualizations and leads Re:Vision’s Living Building research, with a special focus on material toxicity. He knows a staggering amount about the chemical make-up of our built environment, and what he doesn’t know, he knows how to find out.

Chris is a Living Building Challenge Ambassador through ILFI and continues his advocacy with the Philadelphia Living Building Challenge Collaborative. He is also an adjunct professor at Philadelphia University, teaching a course on sustainable technologies for architecture.

Paula Melton, LEED AP BD+C, is Managing Editor at BuildingGreen, where she writes feature articles, blog posts, and product reviews on a variety of sustainable design topics.
