Looking through the Options

Windows have a tremendous effect on the environmental performance of a building. Not surprisingly, the biggest issue of concern is energy. In new houses, windows typically account for 15% to 30% of the total heating load and may account for over half of the summertime cooling load. In commercial buildings, cooling energy loads from windows and glazing systems are typically much more significant than heating loads. The 1.2 billion residential windows in the U.S. account for a total of 2.8 quads (2.95 x 1018 J) of energy consumption per year for heating and cooling, according to researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, or 3.2% of total U.S. energy consumption and 9.0% of residential energy consumption.
