Modular LED Lighting Enters the Mainstream


Most commercial LED (light emitting diode) lighting is comprised of a fixture that contains the LEDs as well as the heat sink that keeps them cool (heat shortens an LED’s lifespan), electronic components called drivers that control the voltage, and reflectors that direct the light beam. The problem, with these units is if the LED fails or a different lighting design is required, the entire fixture often needs to be replaced. To solve this problem several manufacturers—including Xicato, Bridgelux, Philips, Cree, and GE—have introduced replaceable LED modules so the lighting can be changed or upgraded, much like a lightbulb.
