Trees & Wood

November 08 - 09, 2009 - Warren, VT

This course is an in-depth look at the nature of trees and their wood. We will look at the global distribution of forests and their importance, the physiology of trees and wood, and the habitat and nature of trees commonly utilized in construction, cabinetry, and furnituremaking. We will consider the various properties of woods and how to apply that knowledge to choosing the right wood for the job. Esthetics of both the tree and wood will be appreciated. Students will learn about the sizing and grading of wood, and how to make informed purchases and environmentally sound choices. We will experience the working properties of woods through hands-on activities. And we will walk in the forest to gain an understanding of tree selection criteria. Students will come away with much working knowledge and an appreciation of wood and the trees that produce it. All Levels.
