This home is located along the northern Oregon coast. The property has excellent orientation to the south for views of the ocean and daylighting.

Environmental Aspects

Designed to be environmentally responsible in all areas, the home earned a Platinum rating in Portland General Electric's Earth Smart certification program. The integrated design team, including the owners, held multiple design charrettes in addition to open houses during construction and a green-building seminar for local contractors, suppliers, design professionals, and building officials.

The project employs pervious surfaces and manages stormwater on site. Its green roof features native plants. Water use is minimized through irrigation-free landscaping, an on-demand hot water booster pump, and efficient toilets, fixtures, and appliances.

The home was designed to generate as much energy as it consumes annually. Strategies that contribute to the project's efficiency include natural ventilation and daylighting, a high-performance envelope, and a solar-assisted heating system tied to a ground-source heat pump. A grid-tied five-kilowatt photovoltaic system produces electricity on site.

The home was built using insulated concrete forms with rock-wool insulation. Salvaged and certified wood was used extensively. Paints, sealers, and adhesives were selected for their low emissions of volatile organic compounds, and materials with added urea formaldehyde free were avoided. Durable and low-maintenance materials were preferred inside and out.
