Barry Giles is a high performance building consultant and educator with over 35 years in construction and facilities maintenance, with an emphasis on sustainable operations and maintenance.
Barry has been associated with the USGBC since 2002 and a LEED Accredited Professional since 2004. He is a Past Chairman for the USGBC Curriculum Committee, a member the LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Core Committee and a past board member of the Northern California Chapter of the USGBC.
Barry was one of the founding members of the LEED-EB Core Committee and developed all the versions of LEED EB including the current V3 version. He volunteered with the USGBC’s education department and has developed the LEED-EB training workshop that debuted in late 2003. He has recently completed fundamental changes to that workshop that will be debuted in June 2010. Barry currently sits on the GBCI Credentialing Steering Committee and is a past member of the Materials and Resources TAG
As a member of the San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s Task Force on Existing Commercial Building’s, Barry has worked collaboratively with City staff to assess current programs, identify opportunities, and develop strategies to maximize success for the Department of the Environment’s Green Building program
With his deep experience across the entire building lifecycle as an engineer, general contractor, systems operator and facilities supervisor, Barry understands the realities of building design, construction and operations. His company has LEED-consulted on and currently working on over 40 million SF of built environment, representing over 150 projects as large as 4.2 million SF and as small as 2,200 SF, including 65 under the LEED EB O&M 2009/v3 rating system, including the TransAmerica Pyramid and The Orrick building, the highest rated LEED EB in the USA.
