BIO

James sees writing as a form of design and as a form of activism. A member of BuildingGreen’s editorial team, he collaborates to produce content that aims to be useful and inspiring for the sustainable design community. His goal in this work is to create narratives that shift perceptions about what sustainability is and could be.

James draws upon his experience in architectural practice, having spent four years as a design research analyst at BKSK Architects in New York City. At BKSK he served as an in-house sustainable design leader, researched healthy materials, provided LEED consulting and administration, and developed an early analysis protocol for the firm. He also previously worked as a designer for Pilot Projects Design Collective, a group working to provide design services to nonprofit organizations such as the Salvation Army and Revolution Rickshaws.

James studied philosophy and geography before going on to earn his M.Arch from the University of Michigan. He has also been engaged in an independent research project as the 2014 George G. Booth Traveling Fellow. His project, concerned with the social, spatial and material cultures of Denmark as related to wellness, community and stewardship, is titled “Hygge: Dwelling Poetically.”

James is an avid traveler and a book lover. He lives in Brooklyn, New York with his partner, Laura.
