BIO

Mark Wilhelm is Director of Sustainability and Clean Energy with Tierra, where he leverages 36 years of energy and sustainability industry experience across both sides of the utility meter: half spent in the utility sector and half in sustainable building design, construction, and operations.

Mark is an entrepreneurial thought leader who provides strategic planning, carbon strategy, corporate ESG, and sustainability consulting services to Climate Leader clients. His teams deliver transformational solutions to meet complex sustainability goals.

Mark's electric utility sector experience spans technical, customer service, marketing, and product line leadership positions at APS, EPRI, and Tierra. He led the development of the world-class APS Environmental Showcase Home, managed $20 million of end-use energy technology R&D at EPRI, and expanded energy assessment, GHG emissions verification, and corporate ESG service offerings at Tierra.

Mark served as the first chief sustainability executive for Ameresco. He founded and led two successful sustainability consultancies. He consulted on 70 MSF of high-performance buildings and over 100 sustainable developments. He directed LEED certification efforts for 80 projects and trained over 6,000 professionals in sustainable design on four contents.

Mark led the effort to develop a landmark Climate Neutrality Roadmap for ASU to reach decarbonization goals at a lower net present cost than the Business-As-Usual scenario.

In 2017 Mark was named a Top 50 Energy Manager in North America by Energy Manager Today Magazine and earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from AZ Big Media and the USGBC Arizona Chapter. He serves as an Industry Advisor for the ASU Industrial Assessment Center and two engineering master's degree programs. In 2022, Mark was named an Affiliate Global Futures Scholar, Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University. Mark holds a professional MS degree in Environmental Planning from ASU and a BA in Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
