Our firm has had some clients that object to the term "Master Plan." We have removed "Master Planning" from our letterhead, where we list our capabilities and have replaced it with "Planning." Although we still find ourselves using it, old habits die hard, especially when we receive an RFP from a client asking for "Master Planning." Once we get... Read more

I understand the AIA 2030 team is hoping for as many firms (and projects) to submit some form of LCA data in the new DDx website this week, in order to learn how the industry is tracking embodied carbon. We have four projects that dabbled with Tally last year, which we'd like to report this week.
Has anyone run into a hurdle where you... Read more

Evaporative coolers use far less electricity than conventional refrigerant-cycle air conditioners and they operate without the use of refrigerants, both features that make them attractive for green buildings. However, their suitability is limited to drier climates, and most products use significant quantities of water.

Dear Green Gurus,
I both regret and am excited to tell you that I am leaving this group to pursue my next adventure. I'm stepping down as Kirksey's Director of Sustainability, moving to Tucson, and starting my own business. My business plan is to buy existing buildings, renovate them to net zero, and then sell or rent them.

Hello Hive Mind,
We are exploring the sustainability attributes (or lack there of) of Pre-Engineered Metal Building Systems (PEMBS). These ubiquitous design-build structures often fly under the radar of green building design; they make up billions of square feet of construction globally and are steadily increasing due to speed of... I am diving back into Sefaira for the first time in a while, and the program still seems to be missing the ability to account for automatic daylight dimming in energy savings. Previously I had used an LPD reduction equivalent to emulate the savings automatic dimming would provide. Has anyone done a similar work-around?

Chlorine is used to make PVC and PVC... Read more

Hello- I'm curious if anyone has created a visual or 1 pager "roadmap" on thier SCL committments. The use would be a conversation starter for project site visits (many that aren't SCL projects) to get feedback, suggestions and hear any challenges from Superintendents/PM's. Maybe something that connects to a A1-C4 visual? If you've done... Read more

Hello everyone,
We are far too often asked to include parking in our buildings (because why shouldn't the average family have 2.1 kids, .8 pets, and 3 cars) and it always grates on me that we are putting so many resources (natural and monetary) into something that is almost certainly single use and will need to be demolished in 30 years...
