Hello, Green Gurus!
It was lovely to see some familiar faces (and names) in this afternoon's webinar about Low Carbon Specs. A little personal info, but I have just recently returned from maternity leave, and plugging back in to this network of passionate sustainability professionals is one of the things that actually made me look forward... Here is a fundamental question regarding measuring operational carbon emissions that I'm sure many of you can clarify for me: Let's say you are considering design options and you want to know the relative contribution of GWP of adding an additional inch of continuous insulation to the building envelope. The GWP from embodied carbon will... Read more

Hello Sustainable Construction Leaders,
It's come to our attention that although we shared the slides from last fall's all-network Show & Tell in Atlanta, we neglected to include the presentations from the SCL Summit itself. Since we believe in "better late than never," here they are!
As a reminder: we have permission from... Read more

Hi All, I was initially reluctant to share this, but I've seen similar posts and I think it's in line with our mission and interests so I'll go ahead with it.
Tomorrow 12/9 at 1 PM EST I'm moderating a panel of industry leaders in public health (as it pertains to buildings), construction finance, and project development to review the... Read more

Hello!
We have several projects that are either pending ILFI Zero Carbon certification or the owner is planning to purchase offsets to cover construction emissions. Thus far, I have not considered this in our corporate footprint reporting. However, we are including A5 emissions whenever feasible and multiplying that performance over the... Read more

Hello all,
Wondering if anyone has experience with lead limits in electrical cable and wiring?
LEED for Healthcare allows a limit of 300 ppm of lead in electrical wire and cabling - my search for compliant products has been all dead ends. (MRc PBT Source Reduction - lead, cadmium, and copper)
Acceptable regulations for... Read more

I'm working with a project team that is looking into bird control options to prevent nesting/roosting/pooping on the scrim that is designed to scrim their building's facade. They are looking at electrified tape, repellents, laser systems, etc -- Options that don't dramatically impact the building design. The products they're looking at claim... Read more

Hello fellow sustainable design leaders! I am about to kick off an intensive effort here at EHDD to refine our internal standards for materials. We will be considering both GWP as well as the health of materials (avoiding harmful chemicals). In addition to setting the standards, I will be working to develop a process to vet materials before... Read more

Friends,
Through AIA work I have been working with Kim Shinn from TLC Engineering. Kim is involved on the ASHRAE 209 development and has been advocating that the AIA, ASHRAE and USGBC align around this standard. Personally I think this is a good idea as I expect that this standard could easily make it's way into regulations and contracts... Read more

Hi friends,
We recently tracked our water consumption on site during the structural demolition of some existing reinforced concrete buildings. The new OSHA silica regulations required us to keep dust to virtually zero, so we had a bunch of mist cannons and water hoses pumping water around the clock. We consumed ~855,000 gallons in a... Buildings aren’t garbage. But you wouldn’t know it by examining the way the AEC industry works.
We typically design buildings for a single, limited purpose. We build them partly out of plastics that can’t be readily recycled. We choose diverse materials... Read more
