I was shocked to see this new research. Bad news is that acrylic paints are causing 58% of the microplastics pollution in our ocean. Yes, they are plastic. A recent study by Environmental Action, a Swiss-based scientific research firm, shows us that acrylic paint's role in plastic pollution is much greater than most of us realize. The good news... Hi everyone - we have a new higher ed client who is committed to sustainability but not very knowledgeable about current topics such as carbon (both embodied and operational) or the electrification of buildings. I need to educate them and would like to start with some easily-digestible background reading. But as we all know, we're a bit dorky... Read more

Asking for a colleague:
"Have you ever had a large number of fire retardant tarps used to temporarily enclose a building during construction? Do you know of any solutions for recycling/reusing them or another product that doesn't use toxic fire-retardants that meets the performance criteria?"
I think we've all seen poly or fabric... Read more

I am wondering how architectural firms plan to close the gap to zero in the next few years.
Owner's dictate outcomes and the typical owner is not committed to zero - even when sustainability is a focus of the project.
We can present solar-ready designs, all electric buildings, geothermal, etc. but there is still quite a gap to... Read more

Increasingly, owners are asking for risk... Read more

After reviewing BP language today with internal staff, we realized we'll need to add a glossary to explain industry jargon and technical terms that might not be widely used. I'd like to consolidate those terms onto one web page, a glossary. This probably should be on the list with the best practices, and it will need its own page. Thanks!

Dear Green Gurus,
I both regret and am excited to tell you that I am leaving this group to pursue my next adventure. I'm stepping down as Kirksey's Director of Sustainability, moving to Tucson, and starting my own business. My business plan is to buy existing buildings, renovate them to net zero, and then sell or rent them.
