President's Council Outlines Sustainable Development

Sustainable America: A New Consensus for Prosperity, Opportunity, and a Healthy Environment for the Future. The report includes recommendations affecting nearly every aspect of the U.S. economy and society.

The Council’s report gains a great deal of legitimacy from the broad base of constituencies represented: current and former CEOs from companies including Georgia-Pacific Corp., Browning-Ferris Industries, Ciba-Geigy Corp., Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Chevron Corp., and Enron Corp.; leaders of environmental groups including The Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Zero-Population Growth, and others; and high-level government representatives including Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of Energy Hazel O’Leary, and Commerce Secretary Ron Brown. The Council is lead by Jonathan Lash, president of the World Resources Institute, and David Buzzelli, a vice president at The Dow Chemical Company. A long list of high-ranking ex-officio members also endorsed the Council’s work.
