IECA Honors Sellen as Contractor of the Year
Seattle-based Sellen Construction Co. has been honored as 1999 Contractor of the Year by the International Erosion Control Association (IECA). Sellen was lauded for its use of best management practices and state-of-the-art technologies to control erosion and prevent sediment runoff in challenging and sensitive situations. Specific practices include:
•Treating ponds of stormwater with aluminum-based polymers that cause soil colloids to clump together and settle out before the water is released off site;•Spraying slopes with polyacrylamides to control erosion for short periods of time;
•Using a flow-through tank treatment process, adapted from irrigation technology, on sites that lack room for stormwater retention ponds; and
•Developing a recirculating zero-discharge tire bath to wash mud and dirt from truck tires before the trucks leave the site.
The award was presented to Chris Heger, the Sellen superintendent who led these initiatives, at the IECA annual conference in Palm Springs, California on February 23, 2000.
