certifying the process

November 13, 2010

I've seen questions like this in other contexts, especially with projects wanting to get a green certification reflecting what takes place in the building, not just the design of the building itself. Factories, for example.
I would say that LEED is set up to certify, most classically, an office building. This can be extended to admin buildings, even wastewater treatment facilities, but the LEED certification will tend to have less to do with the main thing of what goes on in the building (wastewater treatment) and more about how it is built and operated.
It would be cool to see separate guidelines for this type of project, but I am guessing it would take a move on the part of the wastewater treatment industry, or municipalities who own and run such facilities, to make this come together. It would take some expressed demand to make it happen in LEED, as far as I can guess.

runs the gamut

In my experience it runs the gamut... some project teams aren't aware of them, but then they hit some budget shortfall and are looking for extra money to meet LEED goals, and they find out about programs quick.
I think paperwork plays a big role. The paperwork can be prohibitive for smaller projects, which may need the money more than others.

LEED international roundtable

LEED international roundtable

November 12, 2010

Melissa, you probably already know about the LEED international roundtable, but in case not there's a link to it. USGBC has been putting a real focus into making LEED more accessible for international projects, in a variety of ways (like translating LEED metrics into SI units, as one example).
You may have noticed there is a very strong contingent of people doing international projects on the forums here. So I would suggest you keep your questions coming (and add your experiences). Sound okay?

No, the architect cannot initial for the owner, so the owner does need to be a member of the LEED Online project team. There is no fee associated with adding members like this to the team, and no one, including the owner, has to be a USGBC member.
Does this help?

out buildings and LEED

Sean, since these are in your LEED boundary they should be considered for all relevant LEED credits—which will be most of them. Since they're small and unoccupied, I don't think you need to include them in IEQ credits, or be concerned about the MPR in which a LEED certification is only supposed to include one building.

Transients / FTE defined on PLF3

Transients / FTE defined on PLF3

November 3, 2010

Looking for a 2nd opinion on PLF3. The Transients / FTE defined on Form PLF3 are used for determining water usage, bike racks, showers, and designated parking spaces. They are not used when designing HVAC systems and ventilation correct? For example, let's say I have a 1500 sf conference room and I calculate it's occupancy based on general office space which works out to 6 FTE, no transients. This would be the number used for water calcs, showers, etc. But when designing the HVAC system for the space it has to be done based on maximum occupancy which is 200 occupants. My inclination is to assume that since the space will be unoccupied the majority of the time, counting 200 transients / day isn't the intent of the credit. Is this correct?

Calculating Daily Average for Plf-3 (table 3.3)

Calculating Daily Average for Plf-3 (table 3.3)

November 2, 2010

How do you determine the Daily Average Retail customers and transient occupants? I have calculated 282 peak transients and 23 retail customers and added those to table 3.3 on preliminary form 3. I now need to fill in daily average. I'm assuming that the daily average is going to be a higher number since the transients/customers will be coming in and out?? How is this calculated?

LEED Online and non-US RPC's

November 2, 2010

Thanks everyone for your comments. If a project has Regional Priority credits that are inconsistent with those publicly announced, USGBC asks that project team members use the LEED Online Feedback link to notify the USGBC/LEED Online team. Inconsistencies will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

Additionally, projects registered before the October 16 implementation of RPCs outside of the United States will soon have the relevant credits prioritized and therefore be eligible for the related bonus points. USGBC staff must manually designate the RPCs for previously registered projects. We thank the projects teams in advance for their patience.

Rollar Blinds

Rollar Blinds

October 31, 2010

Hi All,

Just wondering if the building use the roller blinds to block-out the sun during certain time, will it affect the Daylight & View credit? We are selecting the blinds with about 7% transmittance. I think it won't affect since the roller blinds will be using certain period of time. Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rgds,
Grace
