AIA Convention Endorses Sustainable Design
On May 6, 2000 in Philadelphia, members of The American Institute of Architects formally passed a resolution entitled “Sustainable Design.” This resolution was sponsored by John Corkill, Jr., AIA, a member of the Board of Directors, and the AIA’s National Committee on the Environment (COTE). Its stated intent reads: “To acknowledge Sustainable Design as the basis of quality design and responsible practice for AIA architects, and therefore, to integrate Sustainable Design into AIA practices and procedures.”
While it is unclear to what extent the resolution is binding on the AIA, it does include some specific initiatives for the AIA to pursue. These include:
