Bush Orders Lower Standby Power Consumption

On July 31, President George W. Bush signed an Executive Order requiring Federal agencies to purchase electronic equipment with very low standby power consumption. Some electronic devices, such as TVs and VCRs, use standby power to shorten the warm-up time or power a clock. Other devices, such as portable telephones, portable electric tools, and laptop computers, use power for battery charging but continue using standby power even when batteries are fully charged.
