Climate Change in the News

The Northern Hemisphere is warmer now than it has been at any point in the past 2,000 years, according to a study by British and American researchers published in

Geophysical Research Letters this August. Meanwhile, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) acknowledged in a July press release that global warming is causing unpredictable weather patterns. The United Nations organization made this unprecedented announcement following recent extreme weather events worldwide: 562 tornadoes in the U.S. this past May, leapfrogging the previous record of 399 tornadoes in any single month; a pre-monsoon heatwave in India that is blamed for 1,400 deaths; the hottest June in Switzerland in at least two and a half centuries; and the hottest June on record in Geneva. (After this press release came out, more than 14,000 deaths in France were blamed on record high temperatures.)
