Owens Corning announced on August 11 that its Fiberglas® insulation has been certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) as having at least 30% recycled glass content. Tim Grether, Manager of Building Materials Technical Services at the company, gave
EBN a more detailed breakdown of the recycled content: 26% is post-industrial glass cullet from float glass manufacture; 4% is post-consumer bottle glass. (By comparison, Schuller International is certified by SCS as having 25% total recycled content, but 18% post-consumer recycled bottle glass.) In 1995, Owens Corning used 600 million pounds (270 million kg) of waste glass, all of which was used in its Fiberglas insulation; neither the company’s structural glass fiber nor its new Miraflex insulation contain any recycled glass, according to Grether.
