Since its founding in 1989, the Woodworkers Alliance for Rainforest Protection (WARP) has established itself as a group that gets straight to the point—identifying the most immediate needs and working to fill them. Among the first services the group provided was the distribution of a “good wood” list, so that interested wood users could find environmentally sound sources.

Now the group is more established as an organization, and it has taken on a new name: the Good Wood Alliance. The Good Wood List has matured into a “directory,” and it keeps getting bigger and better. The

Directory is organized in a series of lists:

•Certified Sources (forests and plantations),

•Certified Manufacturers,

•Certified Distributors,

•Noncertified Distributors, and

•Noncertified Recycled Sources, Manufacturers and Distributors.

Each listing includes full contact information, products, wood species, source(s) of the material, and (if certified) the certifying organization. All recognized certifications are from groups accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council.

The

Directory now has 26 certified sources and no longer includes the noncertified sources that appeared in earlier versions. According to the

Directory, the U.S. now has a total of 1.6 million acres (650,000 ha) of certified forests, 61% of which are owned by Maine’s Seven Islands Land Company. Worldwide, 13.5 million acres (5.5 million ha) are certified, 52% of which are Smart Wood-certified plantations of Indonesia’s State Forestry Corporation.
