1998 Architecture + Energy Award Winners
Winners of the
Architecture + Energy 1998 Design Awards from AIA Portland were announced on June 26. This year’s jurors (including two
EBN Advisory Board members, Gail Lindsey and Ray Cole) took a novel approach by designing awards to highlight the strengths of the best projects, rather than assigning catch-all “grand prize” or “honor” awards.
TheOptimize Technologies building in Oregon City, Oregon by architect Greg Acker won a
Shared Vision Award. The one-story, 11,000 sq. ft. (1,000 m2) building accomplished its goals at the onset of the project by providing a humane working environment in an industrial setting.
The
Regional Headquarters for the International Woodworkers of America in Gladstone, Oregon, also received a
Shared Vision Award. The 10,000 sq. ft. (900 m2), wood-framed building—constructed in 1980—combines passive and active systems for heating, cooling and ventilation, with daylighting and efficient electrical lighting for increased energy efficiency. Project architect was Howard Glazer, AIA of The Architects Forum.
Dating from 1865, the
Portland City Hall is the oldest building to win an award in the six years of the Architecture + Energy Program. The 87,500 sq. ft. (8,100 m2), four-story building recently underwent a major renovation designed by SERA Architects, P.C, and was honored with
The Cornerstone Award for its “first things first” approach of addressing energy conservation by reducing cooling loads.
Burley Design Cooperative’s Manufacturing Facility, in Eugene, Oregon, won the
Award for Economy of Means and Appropriate Technology. TBG Architects and Planners, Inc. designed the two-story, 60,000 sq. ft. (5,600 m2), pre-engineered metal structure to utilize extensive daylighting, natural ventilation, and amenities to support alternate transportation modes.
The
Marshall Street Addition at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Northwest Portland received the
Award for Enhancing Human, Environmental, and Economic Performance. This 10,950 sq. ft. (1,000 m2) remodel by Johnson Design Studio Architecture, serves both the hospital community and passersby with an “urban wildlife habitat.”
