2004 NYC Green Building Design Competition
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection and U.S. EPA Region 2 have announced the winners of the
first Green Building Design Competition for New York City. The competition was open to actual and theoretical projects designed for any specific site within the five boroughs of New York City. Winners were selected from more than 50 entries for “excellence in the use of good design principles and the integration of green building technologies.” More information is available at www.epa.gov/region2/.
•Queens Botanical Garden
The new Queens Botanical Garden visitor and administrative building, designed by BKSK Architects, includes an innovative rainwater reuse system. Water will be treated without the use of chemicals in the 1,750 ft2 (160 m2) filter system, shown here, before reuse inside the building.

® Platinum rating. The design includes a green roof, photovoltaic panels, a rainwater collection and reuse system, a geothermal heat-pump system, natural ventilation, and daylighting.
•The
Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street Station, servicing almost 170,000 customers a day, is undergoing a major renovation, including the demolition and reconstruction of a bus terminal and the rehabilitation of two train stations, to form a transportation hub. Construction equipment is using ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel, and the completed project will use natural ventilation and daylighting.
•The
Brooklyn Ice House, an industrial building converted into six residential units, was completed earlier this year. The units showcase salvaged materials, including claw-foot tubs and pedestal sinks. The building was designed to achieve a LEED
® Silver rating.
•Spanning 8.5 miles along Manhattan’s East Side, the
Second Avenue Subway Line will utilize a geothermal heat-pump system and fuel-cell technology. The station entrances are designed to take advantage of daylighting and tunnel ventilation.
•
Studio 27 Regenerative Row House is a theoretical housing prototype including a green roof and a system to collect and reuse stormwater.
•
Honorable Mentions went to: Octagon Park Apartments, Raising the Phoenix, the Bronx Criminal Courthouse, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and the New Corona Maintenance Shop and Car Wash.
