BSA Sustainable Designs Awarded

BSA Sustainable Design Awards

Four projects were honored in the Boston Society of Architects’ 1999 Sustainable Design Awards, cosponsored by the Manhattan chapter of The American Institute of Architects. A forum featuring jurors on these winning projects is scheduled for November 17 at the Build Boston Conference.

Honor Awards went to two projects:

•The

Maine Audubon Society’s Environmental Education Center in Falmouth, Maine designed by Van Dam & Renner/Carol A. Wilson Architects with Wright-Ryan Construction, contractor; Swift Engineering, structural design; Bennett Engineering, mechanical systems; Building Science Engineering, environmental consultant; Mohr & Seredin, landscape; and Woodworth Associates, exhibit design; and

Van Atta Design Studios in Santa Barbara, California, built for Wendell and Mona Van Atta by Blackbird Architects of Santa Barbara and San Anselmo, California with Paul Franz Construction, contractor; Howard and Van Sande, structural design; and Van Atta Associates, landscape.

•A

Special Award for Urban Intervention went to

“Recycled Ground”/An Urban Playground in the South Bronx, designed for Volunteers of America by Garrison Siegel Architects of New York City with the New York Botanical Garden Bronx Green-up Program, horticultural consultant; Gilsanz Murray Steficeck, structural design; and Ashton Bowe/Brad Burkhardt/Mark Coe/Jack Kaltner, construction.

•A

Special Award for Sustainability Vision went to a design by Living Energy Systems for

an orphanage in Bien Hoa, Vietnam. The project client was Mrs. Taeko Matsuda and the Japan Housing Organization. Designers included the Claremont (California) Environmental Design Group, Geographic Planning Collaborative, and Applied Ecological Systems.
